It is with great pleasure that we welcome Chartered Civil Engineer, Thomas Leyland<\/a>, to our Manchester office. Thomas graduated with a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Cambridge specialising in Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering.<\/p>

Following graduation, Thomas joined the London Underground Civil Engineering Graduate Scheme and gained experience in railway engineering, whilst maintaining a particular focus on tunnel and earth structure construction and maintenance. After completing the graduate scheme, Thomas then began project engineering where he was responsible for managing the specification, design, construction, assurance, and acceptance of multidisciplinary projects including the Vauxhall Station Upgrade and civil engineering elements of the Four Lines Modernisation Programme. This included reviewing tenders, appointing and managing contractors, and assessing and agreeing on compensation events.<\/p>

On becoming a Chartered Engineer, Thomas joined a small structural design office focusing primarily on domestic work in London, giving him valuable knowledge of the performance and common failure modes of traditional UK housing stock.<\/p>

He then joined M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res to manage the construction of a maternity hospital in coastal Kenya. His responsibilities included managing the budget, programme, design, quality, and approvals, and site supervision. After the successful construction of the project, Thomas then moved to Geneva to work in the MSF Operational Centre headquarters as a construction advisor, providing advice for active projects and developing a management framework to improve the performance of humanitarian construction projects.<\/p>

In 2020, Thomas joined Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group to work in the Consultancy and Engineering Services Team. His work included the design and management of the design of ballastless railway track systems, as well as the planning and management of their construction. This included managing multi-disciplinary design teams and letting and managing subcontract design. Thomas worked on a significant number of projects investigating existing failed ballastless track systems, to identify the root cause of failure, and to design remedial or replacement works.<\/p>
