Fire Expert and Chartered Engineer, Dr Tom Peat<\/a>, recently presented at the annual Marine Insurance Asia event in Singapore.<\/p>

Tom\u2019s presentation Lithium-Ion Battery Fires: A Forensic Insight<\/em> took attendees on a whistle-stop journey through the smouldering world of lithium-ion battery fires as seen through the eyes of an investigator. Tom delved into the science behind explosive incidents, the techniques used to mitigate the risks of lithium-ion battery fires and their potential limitations, and included a look at how modern forensic investigation techniques can shed light on the causes of battery failures.<\/p>

Tom discussed why Li-ion Batteries have become so popular, explaining that they have the highest charge density of any comparable system, meaning that they can provide a lot of energy relative to their weight and are commonly used in devices including, mobile phones, laptops, electric vehicles, power tools and many more.<\/p>

Since joining Hawkins, Tom has investigated over 400 cases involving fires, explosions, escapes of fluid, and engineering failures, ranging from small domestic claims to large multi-million-pound losses in the UK and internationally., He has prepared expert reports for both Pursuers and Defenders, and given expert evidence in the Sheriff Courts.<\/p>
