Chartered Engineer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/experts\/hugh-martindale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Hugh Martindale<\/a>, presented <em>\u2018Offshore Wind Subsea Power Cables: Understanding Damage\u2019<\/em> and gave an overview of subsea power cable applications, explaining the different types and their capabilities, structure, typical failure modes and the industry response to these failures.<\/p><p>He was followed by Materials Engineer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/experts\/amir-hajdaei\/\">Dr Amir Hajdaei<\/a> who discussed <em>\u2018Wind Turbines and Associated Failures\u2019<\/em>. Amir shared details of wind power capacity and trends, wind turbine components including blade structure, typical wind turbine failures, and the common causes of failure.<\/p><p>Electrical Engineer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/experts\/ben-lister\/\">Ben Lister<\/a>, then presented <em>\u2018Widespread Issues in the UK Solar Fleet\u2019<\/em>. He explained that the three common issues are defective components, environmental impacts and maintenance in the modern industry. He then reviewed a typical UK solar farm \u2018indoor\u2019 substation and concluded with maintenance best practices.<\/p><p>The final presentation came from the head of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/expertise\/built-environment\/\">Built Environment<\/a> team, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/experts\/andrew-reeves-2\/\">Andrew Reeves<\/a> who discussed <em>\u2018Renewable Power \u2013 Structural Failures\u2019<\/em>. Andrew explained the differences between Civil\/Structural Engineers and Mechanical Engineers stating that there is a simple rule of thumb: <em>\u2018If it was meant to move but now doesn\u2019t, you need a Mechanical Engineer: If it was not meant to move but has collapsed, slid, or rotated, you need a Civil\/Structural Engineer\u2019<\/em>.
