However, in some large vessels, the addition of gas turbines can be found for that extra bit of thrust\/speed. When combining diesel combustion engines with aeroderivative gas turbines in power generation assets and mechanical drive systems, the fuel specification and adherence to the specification are critical. Compliance ensures the optimal operation and longevity of the asset, whilst minimising down time.<\/p><p>Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/experts\/stephen-rowbotham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Rowbotham<\/a>, is our latest expert to feature in the Marine Insurer Journal. Stephen\u2019s article \u201c<em>The Importance of Fuel Systems in Marine Operations<\/em>\u201d explains how propulsion drive systems can be susceptible to damage and loss of power if problems exist within the fuel supply system. These issues can be caused by using the wrong fuel, or if contaminants are present within the fuel system. He highlights that if contamination occurs, it can lead to a sudden loss of power which can affect the safety of the vessel. Contamination can also compromise the integrity of the engine and the fuel system, which will require draining and cleaning, both of which will be costly and time-consuming to execute.<\/p><p>Stephen shares a case study where such issues were present and provides an overview of what a Hawkins investigator looks for when identifying these issues.<\/p><p>Stephen has extensive global experience in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/expertise\/power-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">power &amp; energy<\/a> industry, helping loss adjusters, insurance companies and owners\/operators investigate incidents in power plants, ranging from renewables to thermal generation assets.
