Richard\u2019s presentation: <em>\u2018Lithium-Ion Battery Fires: A Forensic Insight\u2019<\/em> discussed the explosive world of lithium-ion battery fires as seen through the eyes of a forensic investigator. Richard delved into the science behind explosive incidents, the techniques used to mitigate the risks, and how modern forensic investigation techniques can shed light on the causes of battery failures. He included a review of the problems that everyday consumers face regarding lithium-ion batteries and discussed the challenges an investigator might encounter when conducting such forensic investigations.<\/p><p>Richard explained that lithium-ion batteries have become ubiquitous due to their compact size and high energy density compared to other battery chemistries. He advised that they have the highest charge density of any comparable storage system, but with the increased storage comes increased risk, stating that thermal runaway is one of the primary risks related to such batteries. Simply put; thermal runaway is an uncontrollable, self-heating state in which the cell releases its stored energy. This is particularly dangerous in lithium-ion cells due to the high energy density as the more charge the cell has, the more energetic the runaway is.<\/p><p>He advised that the common causes of failure are a result of poor electrochemical design, manufacturing defects and defects in their use\/disposal, such as mechanical, thermal or electrical abuse, and DIY battery replacement.<\/p><p>Richard specialises in the investigation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/expertise\/fire-explosions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fires, explosions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/expertise\/engineering\/electrical-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electrical engineering losses<\/a>. He has undertaken many forensic investigations of fires in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/expertise\/fire-explosions\/building-fires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">industrial and commercial premises and domestic properties<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawkins.biz\/expertise\/fire-explosions\/vehicle-plant-machinery-fires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vehicle\/machinery fire losses<\/a>.
