Finite element (FE) modelling is a mathematical representation of a structure that incorporates geometry, material properties, and loading conditions to understand the mechanical environment. The use of FE modelling has revolutionised structural analysis, though discrepancies persist due to idealisation or material variability.

Principal Acoustic Consultant, Dr Andrew Peplow, in collaboration with a Lund University researcher, explored these challenges in their paper in the Journal of Building Engineering. The paper focuses on Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), a composite wooden structure gaining traction as a sustainable alternative to materials like reinforced concrete and steel. However, due to the inherent variability in wood’s mechanical characteristics, the mechanical properties of CLT can vary significantly. This research identifies sensitive mechanical properties, including longitudinal Young’s modulus, internal shear moduli, and rolling shear modulus, using a model updating procedure based on data from Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA). The study also provides mathematical derivations and a step-by-step implementation algorithm, offering practical solutions for structural engineers.

Andrew has over 30 years of expertise in vibration, noise, and acoustics, with a specialisation in integrating structural dynamics into acoustic solutions. His extensive consultancy work spans from railway vibration assessments and noise management for wind farms, to acoustically critical infrastructure design. Andrew has been instrumental in applying advanced structural dynamics techniques to solve complex vibration challenges in buildings and other structures. His research, which includes over 40 published articles, combines technical knowledge with innovative approaches like machine learning, continues to drive advancements in both structural and acoustic engineering.

Andrew is a Principal Acoustic Consultant based in our Cambridge Office.
