Hawkins welcomed<\/span> guests<\/span> from CNA Hardy to <\/span>step into the world of forensic <\/span>investigation<\/span> through a series of interactive and educational activities.<\/span> Our Forensic Fun Days aim to provide insight into how our investigators approach an investigation to <\/span>establish<\/span> the root <\/span>cause of an<\/span> incident.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One of the most popular challenges was <\/span>a \u202ffire investigation<\/a><\/span><\/span> exercise, led by\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Dr Hugh Martindale<\/a><\/span><\/span>, Senior Associate at Hawkins and a Chartered Mechanical Engineer. Using a realistic reconstruction of a fire-damaged socket setup, guests were tasked with <\/span>identifying<\/span> the cause of a simulated electrical fire. By analysing painted witness marks (<\/span>representing<\/span> smoke and charring) and testing plug fuses, participants had to deduce which of five household appliances was responsible. The session offered a fascinating look at how fire investigators reconstruct events using physical evidence<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Another highlight of the day was a \u202fhands-on demonstration of <\/span>our<\/span> Hirox<\/span> RX 100 <\/span><\/a>digital microscope, led by \u202f<\/span><\/span>Adrian Ratte<\/span><\/span><\/a>, an Associate at Hawkins with <\/span>expertise<\/span> in electrical engineering<\/a> and fire investigation. Guests were amazed as they viewed a\u202freal fly\u202funder the microscope, revealing the intricate structures of its head in detail. Adrian explained how this high-resolution imaging technology is used in forensic investigations to examine trace evidence, tool marks, and surface textures that are invisible to the naked eye. His demonstration <\/span>gave<\/span> a glimpse into the precision and depth of analysis that <\/span>our investigative<\/span> tools can provide.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Gareth Dobinson<\/span><\/span><\/a>, Principal Associate and Regional Manager at Hawkins, delivered a\u202fpractical demonstration on escapes of water<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>a common but often complex area of forensic investigation. Gareth, who specialises in mechanical engineering<\/a> and building systems, explained how investigators trace the source of water damage, distinguish between accidental leaks and gradual failures, and assess whether damage may have been caused deliberately. His session gave guests a hands-on look at the tools and methods used to investigate water-related incidents, <\/span>including<\/span> pipework failures <\/span>and <\/span>regulatory non-compliance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Midway through the day, guests enjoyed \u202flunch, giving them the chance to network, and chat informally with Hawkins\u2019 forensic experts. The day concluded with two insightful presentations, \u202fNico Zurcher<\/a>\u00a0\u202fintroduced guests to Hawkins\u2019 \u202fmarine services<\/a>, highlighting the firm\u2019s expertise in investigating incidents involving ships, cargo, ports, and offshore structures. This was followed by a \u202fpower generation presentation by Ben Adams<\/a>, who explored the forensic analysis of failures in power systems<\/a>, including turbines, generators, and associated infrastructure. Both sessions offered a deep-dive into the specialist areas of forensic engineering and demonstrated the breadth of Hawkins\u2019 capabilities.<\/p>
